Delegation challenges government over trade today

A blown-up photograph of Saturday's Trade Justice Parade is being presented to Patricia Hewitt, Minister for Trade and Industry at 2pm this afternoon. The heads of CAFOD, Christian Aid, Action Aid, Friends of the Earth, Oxfam, Traidcraft, Save the Children Fund, SCIAF, TEARfund, Speak, Fairtrade Foundation, Banana Link, WDM and the Women's Institute will take part in the presentation. More than 7,000 people came to Trafalgar Square at the weekend parade to call for fairer rules on international trade and reform of the World Trade Organisation (WTO). The Trade Justice Movement hope the photo will remind Ms Hewitt of the strength of feeling of British people on trade as she heads to the WTO Summit in Doha later this week. The Trade Justice Movement are concerned that the Doha Summit will fail to address the concerns of developing countries and many civil society groups. Deputy Director of CAFOD Pat Jones, speaking on behalf of the Trade Justice Movement, said: "The Doha meeting must prioritise addressing imbalances in existing agreements, rather than adding new issues to the agenda. In Doha the WTO must adopt an agenda that promotes poverty reduction and sustainable development. "Trade is a powerful force that could bring prosperity to all. We ask that the UK delegates use this vital opportunity to press world leaders to rewrite the unfair trade rules that put profit before people and the planet."
