New archbishop for Glasgow


A new archbishop for Glasgow has been named this morning. He is the Rt Rev Mario Joseph Conti, currently Bishop of Aberdeen. Born at Elgin, Moray, 20 March 1934 Bishop Conti was educated at St Marie's Convent, Elgin, Springfield School, Elgin; St. Mary's College, Blairs, and the Scots College, and Gregorian University, in Rome. Ordained priest at Rome, 26 October 1958; he was assistant priest at St. Mary's Cathedral, Aberdeen from l959-62 and parish priest in Wick from 1962-67, Thurso, 1967-77. He was ordained bishop of Aberdeen by Gordon Gray, Cardinal Archbishop of St. Andrews and Edinburgh, at Aberdeen on 3 May 1977. On hearing the news, Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor said: "I am very pleased at the announcement that Bishop Mario Conti is to be the new Archbishop of Glasgow. He will take with him invaluable experience and insights acquired after twenty-five years as Bishop of Aberdeen. He has my prayerful good wishes as he takes up his new appointment."
