Church group conference - food for thought

The Churches Rural Group (CRG) has welcomed the recommendations made by Sir Donald Curry's Commission which was looking into ways to improve farming methods and food production and marketing in the UK. The interdenominational organisation described the Curry Report "Food and Farming - a sustainable future', as holistic and comprehensive. "[It] calls for a response in full from the Treasury," added CRG chair Richard Lewis, Bishop of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich. At a conference attended by over 100 of the various churches' key rural specialists this week, representatives demanded more cohesion between government departments working to create a healthy eating awareness programme based on local quality foods. The conference also recommended greater recognition on the part of government, of the impact of globalisation on farmers in every nation and urged that all churches should support local food producers within their own communities and encourage the practice of saying grace before meals, "to rekindle a sense of the gift of foodstuffs to humankind." The Churches Rural Group represents most of the Christian denominations active in the countryside and is a part of Churches Together in England.
