BBC goes to church for three days


The BBC is about to undertake its largest-ever outside broadcast. Based at the Churches' Broadcasting Conference at The Hayes Conference Centre, Swanwick, Derbyshire, from 2pm next Monday 10 June to 12.30pm on Wednesday 12 June the BBC English Regions New Media will be running non-stop on-line religious programmes. Throughout the three days there will be services, music, news, interviews and reports from the conference. Alan Bookbinder, Head of BBC Religion and Ethics, will feature in an hour-long session: 'Seeing Through the Media? Audiences, Broadcasters and Spirituality', at 4pm 10 June, examining the new interest in spirituality post 11 September. He will then go into the BBC New Media chat room for 30 minutes to take questions and debate the issues. Andy Griffee, Controller of BBC English Regions, will present the BBC's local community vision in the session 'Local Radio + Internet + Access = New Opportunities for Local Communities' at 11.15am on 11 June; Andy will also be in the BBC New Media chat room hot seat for 30 minutes afterwards. On 12 June there will be a feature on religion and sport - in the run-up to the England v Nigeria match. During the three days the BBC will train three young people in web design; for speech radio, music radio and television. Their work will be considered for inclusion on BBC website. Other features of the Conference and BBC New media coverage include a chance to vote in the BBC poll for the next Archbishop of Canterbury. Visitors will also be able to see and hear the very best of local religious broadcasting in the Andrew Cross 2002 Awards which will have full coverage on the web at 8pm on 11 June.
