Scottish Christians in massive peace rally
More than 10,000 people turned out for Saturday's march and rally in Glasgow, organised by the Scottish Coalition for Justice not War. A large Christian contingient came from the Catholic Justice and Peace Commission, Pax Christi, Christian CND, many religious orders, the Church of Scotland, Scottish Quakers and many individual churches and parish groups. On several occasions numbers of people arriving were so great, the crowd was brought to a standstill. At the rally in St George's Square which followed, there were speakers from many political, trade union, church and community organisations, all expressing their concerns at the threat of war on Iraq. Thousands of people signed a pledge to engage in non-violent civil resistance should Iraq be attacked. Andrew Murray, of the English and Welsh Stop the War Campaign, urged everyone to participate in the day of action on 31 October.
