New bishop for East Anglia

Canon Michael Evans has been appointed new Bishop of East Anglia. The seat became vacant when Bishop Peter Smith, became the Archbishop of Cardiff in December 2001. Canon Michael will be ordained bishop at St John's Cathedral in Norwich on 19 March. Ordained in 1975, Canon Michael, 51, is currently a parish priest in Tunbridge Wells in Kent, and has also worked as a university chaplain in London. In 1996 he was appointed Canon Theologian. He said: "I was astonished to be appointed as Bishop of East Anglia, and have a real sense of my unworthiness for this responsibility, but I accepted this new ministry with a joyful though nervous 'yes'. "I look forward to getting to know the diocesan family of East Anglia, and to working with my brother priests and deacons as a team dedicated to the ministry of Christ. As I prepare for my ordination, I ask everyone to keep me in their prayers." Monsignor Tony Rogers said: "I am sure that I speak for everyone in the diocese when I say that Canon Michael Evans will be assured the warmest of welcomes when he comes to East Anglia. He combines great pastoral experience with theological insight, and he can be sure of our collaboration in the challenges that lie ahead, as we seek to discern the Lord's will for us." Archbishop Peter Smith said: "I was delighted to hear that Canon Michael Evans has been appointed Bishop of East Anglia. He will bring with him 28 years' experience of a broad and varied priestly ministry as a theologian and teacher, an author and parish priest. "He has considerable experience in the ecumenical field and over the years has exercised a dedicated ministry to young people. I believe that all this, together with his commitment to collaborative ministry, will make him well suited to his new role as the third Bishop of East Anglia."
