Fresh hope for Newman cause

The Postulator of the Newman Cause, Father Paul Chavasse, has given an encouraging update on its progress in the Lent issue of Birmingham Catholic News, the newspaper of the Archdiocese of Birmingham, out this weekend. Fr Chavasse, who is The Provost of Newman's Oratory Church in Edgbaston, Birmingham, writes: "The annual remembering of the Cardinal's birthday (tomorrow) is a time for reflecting on the progress of his Cause for Canonization and what has happened in the past year. "Some might say that not a lot seems to have occurred, and indeed, compared with the progress of Causes like that of Mother Teresa, the Cardinal moves slowly! However, there is real progress to report this year, and there are many signs that things are entering a new, and we hope, crucial phase. "It is not possible to pre-judge the Church's verdict in these things, and it would be wrong to presume too much, or raise too many hopes too soon, but that said I can still report what I believe to be significant and hopeful signs. "This is because as I have mentioned in this column before more and more people around the world are turning to the Cardinal as an advocate and intercessor in matters concerning physical well being and the search for a cure from illness.Hence it is, as I write, that there are now no fewer than three possible (and I must emphasise 'possible') cures on the books, all of which are being examined or are about to be examined. "Two of these are in the United States of America; the third is in Austria. These are early days, but if God so wishes it, things may happen which will be the answer to so many prayers of so many people around the world. "The miraculous apart, the past year has seen a continued growth in the number of people writing to me to report other sorts of favours granted as a result of Cardinal Newman's intercession." Saturday, February 21 is the 203rd anniversary of the birth of the Venerable John Henry Cardinal Newman in the City of London. A special sung Mass is being at Newman's Oratory Church in Edgbaston, Birmingham, at 11.00am. The celebrant and preacher will be the Right Reverend Philip Boyce, Bishop of Raphoe, Ireland. The Mass will be followed by a talk at 12.30pm, followed by a Musical Oratory consisting of vocal and instrumental music, preaching and prayer at 2.00pm. The afternoon will end with Benediction at 3.00pm. Cardinal Newman died on August 11, 1890, at the House Oratory, Hagley Road, which he founded.
