Queen's birthday honours


George Gelber the Head of CAFOD's Public Policy Unit was awarded an OBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours list. George joined CAFOD in 1989 when he campaigned on Latin America. He set up the aid agency's public policy unit in 1993 and is renowned for his knowledge of and commitment to issues such as debt, fair trade and human rights. Director of CAFOD, Chris Bain, said: "We are absolutely delighted that George has been recognised in this way. He has worked tirelessly in the international development sector for 30 years. "In his years at CAFOD he has built up a small but powerfully effective team of researchers and advocacy officers and led them in effective campaigning and lobbying work. "Among many achievements he made a significant contribution to the cause of international development at the World Economic Forum last year, as well as in Cancun at the World Trade Organisation meeting, where he represented the cause of the developing countries on issues related to trade, specifically, the Common Agricultural Policy. "He is highly respected not only amongst his colleagues but throughout the international aid sector." Other Catholics who were honoured this year include: Mother Mary Garson, who received an MBE for services to the care of the elderly in Britain and overseas; Philip Entwistle, Headteacher, St Bede's Catholic High School, Ormskirk, Lancashire and Peter Evans, Headteacher, Cardinal Newman Roman Catholic Secondary School, Hove, East Sussex. who both won OBEs for for services to Education. Civil Order of the British Empire (MBE) and Monica Rooney, Physical Education teacher, at St Julie's Catholic High School who was awarded a Civil Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to Education. Dr David Goldberg, Rabbi was awarded an OBE for services to Inter-Faith Relations. Sharif Muhammad Hasan-Al Banna, won an MBE for services to inter-faith dialogue and to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office Hajj Advisory Group.
