Westminster: launch of Day For Life

Bishop Bernard Longley today launched the Bishops' Conference of England & Wales's 2004 Day for Life. Bishop Longley, an Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Westminster, said the day - on Sunday, July 4 - offers "an opportunity for the Church's teaching to be clearly enunciated and for parishes to celebrate family life". Half-a-million Day for Life newsletters have been sent to the parishes - one for every Catholic family in England & Wales - along with support material for parish priests. "I am sure that the liturgical material will encourage parishes to focus on families," said Bishop Longley, who chaired this year's Day for Life working group. "There is a constant need to update people and keep them abreast of Church teaching." The Day for Life was relaunched last year with a three-year cycle, and this year's day will be dedicated to the family. The newsletter includes articles on keeping families afloat, fostering, Listening 2004, migration, the family and the media, and the Bishops' Conference teaching document Cherishing Life. Bishop Longley said: "The format encourages people to dip into various articles. It is hoped there is something for all the family - young and old. It particularly encourages them to pray together and to offer mutual support." He highlighted the Listening 2004 initiative. "Each diocese is having a Listening Day, attended by Bishop John Hine, the project leader. It is a sounding - families responding to a variety of questions," Bishop Longley said. And on the immigration issue, Bishop Longley referred to a recent instruction from the Vatican's Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant Peoples entitled The Love of Christ Towards Migrants. He paid tribute to the "wonderful contribution to parish life that many migrant families have made". Source: CCS
