London: Pax Christi Peace Icon comes to St Ethelburga's


St Ethelburga's Centre for Reconciliation and Peace in the City of London, is hosting an Icon of Peace during the week 17 - 22 October 2004. The Icon will provide the focus of a programme of celebration, discussion, reflection and music on the theme of reconciliation. The Icon, which is dedicated to the work of Pax Christi, an international Catholic movement for peace was made at the Monastery of St John in the Desert, near Jerusalem. It carries illustrations of religious saints and figures who all in their own way worked for peace and reconciliation. A service of dedication and blessing of the Icon will take place on Sunday 17 October at 6pm with the Rt Revd Richard Chartres, Anglican Bishop of London, Russian Orthodox Bishop Basil of Sergievo and Rt Rev Anthony Maggs, Abbot Primate of the Canons Regular of St Augustine. All are invited to: Daily lunchtime event 1.10-1.50. City Space, periods of reflection and prayer on the theme of healing and reconciliation with Mildred Nevile, Fr Tom Cullinan and Fergal McLoughlin. Tuesday 19 October at 6pm an evening on Meditation: the seeker's path to inner peace with Fergal McLoughlin, National Coordinator for Christian Meditation in Ireland. Wednesday 20 October at 5.45pm a seminar entitled Signs of Hope in the Middle East - with Jonathan Gorsky, Council of Christians and Jews; Angela O'Donoghue, Ecumenical Accompaniment Programme in Palestine and Israel and Dawud Price, Islamic Relief Thursday 21 October at 7pm Rivers of Babylon , a group of singers and instrumentalists will offer a programme of religious and secular music of the Iraqi (Babylonian) Jewish tradition. Two groups of school children will be involved in workshops on art, peace and conflict resolution during the week. Speaking of the week, Valerie Flessati, a Vice President of Pax Christi and organiser of the week saidP: "It is wonderful to see how a spiritual work of art can open opportunities for real reflection and study of peacemaking. We are delighted to be working with St Ethelburga's on this project and we hope that people will feel free to visit at any time during the week and join in those activities which most attract them" St Ethelburga's at 78 Bishopsgate, London EC2 was destroyed in 1993 by a bomb, the building re-opened in 2002 as a place of dialogue for groups in conflict.
