Women's World Day of Prayer on the Isle of Dogs

The annual ecumenical Women's World Day of Prayer, on the Isle of Dogs, will be celebrated this year with an ecumenical prayer service. The event will be held at St Edmund's Roman Catholic Church on Westferry Road, on Friday, 4 March at 7.30pm. The theme this year is 'Let our light shine' and has been prepared by Christian women from Poland. The Day of Prayer is a world-wide movement of Christian woman of many traditions who come together to observe a common day of prayer on the first Friday in March each year. The movement was started in 1887 by a woman in a New York Presbyterian church and was later joined to a similar initiative by two Baptists ministers for prayers for overseas missions to form the one day of prayer by all Christian women. The first service held in Scotland took place in 1930 and in England in 1932. The UK's office is located in Tunbridge Wells and services 3000 local branches in the UK. More than 170 countries and islands take part each year with the annul service designed by women from one country being translated into more than 60 languages and 1000 dialects. All are welcome to the service including men, women and people of all ages. For more information contact: Sister Sylvia Swift, on: 020-7537-9709 or 020-7515-8944 or visit: st-edmund-millwall.org.uk
