Abbot of Downside becomes canon at Wells Cathedral
Wells Cathedral has appointed its first ever ecumenical canons. Right Reverend Dom Richard Yeo, Abbot of Downside, and Reverend Norman Wallwork, Superintendent Methodist Minister for the Weston-super-Mare and Burnham-on-Sea Circuit, were installed during Evensong in the Church of England Cathedral.
Non-residentiary canons of Wells Cathedral are known as prebendaries, and Dom Richard is Prebendary of Compton Dundon and Reverend Wallwork is Prebendary of Holcombe.
During the ceremony, Bishop of Bath and Wells, Right Reverend Peter Price said, "This is a unique event in the life of this Cathedral church and the Diocese of Bath and Wells. The challenge for us as a Christian community is to work towards the unity of all believers in Christ. This act is a movement in some small way towards that unity which we long for and pray for.
This is a statement of faith, an activity of hope and an intention of love. The Lord bids us constantly to love one another. Let this be a symbol of our intention to obey that command to love one another as we have been loved by Christ Jesus."
