Pax Christi celebrates 60 years of peacemaking

On Saturday 18 June, the British section of Pax Christi, the international Catholic movement for peace, will celebrate its 60th anniversary at an event in Hendon, north London. Speakers at the Celebrating Peacemaking part of the day are Mairead Corrigan Maguire, Nobel Peace Laureate, the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, Michel Sabbah and Etienne De Jonghe, the International Secretary of Pax Christi from Brussels. Mairead, from Northern Ireland, will speak on the challenges for peace in the 21 century. The Patriach will speak during the ecumenical celebration and will focus on the need for peacemaking in Israel and Palestine. During the Celebrating Peacemaking programme Pax Christi will give its bi-annual peace award to three women, Sr Pat Robb, Margot Hutchison and Judith Dawes as an acknowledgement of their contribution to peacemaking in the UK. Other elements of the day include a range of inter-active peace activities, a programme for children, a programme with the Pax Christi ICON of peace, an exhibition of the past and current work of Pax Christi and the official Annual General Meeting of Pax Christi. The day will be drawn together in an ecumenical service. Pat Gaffney, General Secretary of Pax Christi said: " The day offers us the chance to mark the extensive work of our movement over the past 60 years in a celebratory and inclusive way. We hope that the event will attract both those who are familiar with our work and those who know little of us but who are interested in learning more about us. We plan to offer something for everyone and to show that peacemaking can be fun and is about celebration and the building of community. We also want to be challenged by our speakers to renew our commitment to peacemaking for the future". The day begins at 10.30am.
