North London: multifaith pilgrimage for peace

Source: Christians Together in Camden

We had a spectacularly good turnout for the Twentieth Multifaith Pilgrimage for Peace on Saturday. The weather was near perfect, bright, cool and the occasional spots of rain insufficient to make anyone wet.

There were about 250 of us assembled from far and wide at Friends' House, Euston Road for the 9am start. Crossing Euston Road required seven changes of traffic lights!

We barely fitted into the little basement mosque in Crowndale Road and almost filled the Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Kentish Town Road. By lunch-time - as in previous years, a substantial sandwich lunch sent in their van from Birmingham by our friends of the Sachkhand Nanak Dham International and served by them, this time in the parish centre at Our Lady Help of Christians RC Church in Lady Margaret Road, Kentish Town, we were nearer to 500 in number. After that we visited the Shaolin (Chinese Buddhist) Temple in Junction Road and the Murugan (Saivite Hindu) Temple in Archway Road. During the afternoon walkers had gradually tailed off but more than 200 were still with us at St Mellitus RC Church, Tollington Park for the meal prepared by their Justice and Peace group at 6.30pm.

First time pilgrims especially were impressed by the gracious welcome given by our hosts at each stop and by the general atmosphere of acceptance and friendliness. Many were the 'See you next year!' farewells to new friends.
