New Ways chief executive wins top award

13 September 2006 - ICN archive.

Angela Docherty, chief executive of New Ways, a charity which supports the work of the St Paul's Missionary Community in Africa and South America, has won a prestigious UK Charity Award 2006. Angela was presented the award of Charity Principal of the Year in a glittering ceremony last night at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London, in the presence of Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex. The evening was compered by BBC presenter Jeremy Vine. Ed Milliband, MP and Minister for the Third Sector also attended the event which was sponsored by Charity Times magazine. The prize is given to: 'an executive head of the organisation who has demonstrated outstanding leadership and management skill in the running of a charity.'

Founded in 1994, and run on an almost entirely voluntary basis, New Ways supports health, education, water and agricultural development projects in Africa and South America. Its focus is on helping communities become self-sufficient.

Angela Docherty said: "I am overjoyed and honoured to have been given this award. But really its an award for New Ways. Like all the winners on the night, I am one of a team of many, many volunteers who give up their time with family and friends to help New Ways with its development work in Kenya and Latin America.

"From my perspective this award belongs to our colleagues working in the field year after year, alongside the communities we support, for their inspiration, passion and dedication - which drives me and the volunteers here in the UK and Ireland to do whatever we can to help them continue their great work."
