Edinburgh: major presentation on Church and Environment

Leading ecological campaigner, Mary Colwell, is to make a presentation in Edinburgh to Cardinal Keith Patrick O'Brien next week. 'One Thin Ice - The Churches and the Environment' takes place at The Lauriston Jesuit Centre, 28 Lauriston Street, Edinburgh on Friday 10 November at 7.30 pm. The event is free and open to all. Mary Colwell is a parishioner at Clifton Cathedral and a senior producer for TV and radio at the Bristol-based BBC Natural History Unit. Mary will be joined by Cardinal Keith Patrick O'Brien, Archbishop of St Andrews and Edinburgh, Professor Aubrey Manning, author and broadcaster and Emeritus Professor of Natural History at Edinburgh University, and Owen Dudley Edwards, historian, author and broadcaster, who will chair the evening. Professor Aubrey Manning said: "Earth's life-support systems are under strain. For the first time in all history human activities are having global effects and are threatening not just our future but that of all the other living things who share the planet with us. The Earth is not limitless and we cannot take it for granted. Environmentalists of many types have long recognised this but we face a huge task of persuasion. "Mary Colwell's work with the BBC's Natural History Unit has given her a unique perspective on the destruction which is being wrought on wildlife and our environment. She faces the problem from a Christian viewpoint, seeing it as a key moral issue which is the Church's vital duty to move centre stage. Her lecture is an urgent and vivid wakeup call which all of us must support." Mary Colwell's TV programmes include Europe - A Natural History, British Isles - A Natural History, Wildlife on One, Natural World, and Predators. She has produced numerous documentaries for BBC Radio 4. Her most recent project for TV is Planet Earth - The Future, and for BBC Radio 4, a series exploring the approach of major religions to the natural world through visiting a garden that is special to that faith.
