Scots at the Vatican: extra

Following the article we published on 6 December: Scots descend on Vatican, ICN, 6 December, we received an email from Rev A McKenzie, secretary of the Scots College Society, who organised the visit by the 70 former students. He has very kindly given us some more information about the day and pointed out that there was one Special Audience with the Pope on Monday 4 December, not two at different times. Rev McKenzie writes: "Cardinal Winning in a speech to the Holy Father announced the nature of the occasion, and the presence of the whole Scottish Hierarchy (all eight of them) along with the First Minister and the Secretary of State, and intimated the arrival later in the day of the Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. He continues: "The Pope then responded with an address to us all, after which we recited the Angelus together and he gave us his blessing. Then the Cardinal introduced individually the other bishops and then the two Scottish political leaders, then the civic leaders of the four cities in Scotland. After all this, the present College students and staff joined the bishops and the politicians around the Holy Father for a group photo. "The rector's name is Fr Chris McElroy, and the following day (the actual anniversary) he was made a Monsignor."
