CAFOD rushes support to Peruvian earthquake zone
Comment Email Print
CAFOD is sending US$10000 to the Peruvian Catholic Church's social action commission (CEAS) as an initial gesture of solidarity with the victims of the earthquake that struck southern Peru early on Saturday morning. Reports on the evening of Monday 25 June said that the initial death toll had doubled to 97 and that over 50 people were missing. The figure for injured was 1,169, and more than 46,000 people had been affected, many losing their homes. These figures may rise further as remoter regions are reached. CEAS director Laura Vargas told CAFOD on Monday: "It has been bad, and it will be the rural areas that have been worst hit. The Peruvian government, foreign governments and relief organisations are responding to immediate needs. It will take a week or so to evaluate longer-term needs." The Peruvian bishops have called for a day of prayer and a national collection for the victims on Sunday 1 July under the title 'Solidarity with the South'. In a message to the President of the Peruvian Bishops' Conference, Bishop Luis Babarén, CAFOD director Julian Filochowski said: "Our thoughts and prayers will be with you in a special way next Sunday. We are saddened that this tragedy should have struck Peru at a moment when it has spectacularly recovered its national dignity." CAFOD spends about £300,000 a year on development work through some 24 local partners in Peru. CAFOD's Peru Programme Officer Francis McDonagh said: "We are in touch with our partners to monitor the situation and see how best we can contribute to reconstruction." To make donations, contact CAFOD on freephone number 0500 85 88 85, or visit their website through our Links pages.
