American bishops set up disaster fund
The US Conference of Catholic Bishops have chosen one organisation to coordinate Catholic relief for victims of last week's terrorist attacks. Catholic Charities, the main domestic aid agency run by the church in America will distribute funds to local social service agencies and offices in the affected areas. Fr J. Bryan Hehir, president of Catholic Charities, said: "our local agencies are assessing the needs of their communities. Many are already providing grief counselling and emergency assistance to help people cope. "Over the coming days, weeks and months, our agencies will continue to provide whatever services are necessary to see our neighbours through this difficult time." To make a donation to the fund, call: (800) 919-9338, or send cheques to Catholic Charities USA, PO Box 25168, Alexandria, VA 22313-9788, USA.
