Philippines: first news of kidnapped priest
Comment Email Print
¬†Ten days after the missionary priest Fr Giuseppe Pierantoni was abducted at gunpoint, on Mindanao island, (see ICN 19 October: Missionary kidnapped in Philippines ), the diocese has received a message from the kidnappers. The Missionary News Service report that the Bishop of Pagadian, Mgr Zacharias C. Jimenez, received a request yesterday for shoes and medicine for Fr. Giuseppe. The bishop said he wanted proof that the request was genuine before he fulfilled the request. At present the military police say they are convinced the abduction was carried out by either the MILF (Moro Liberation Front) ≠ which a few days ago signed a peace accord with the government ≠ or the Abu Sayyaf extremist Islamic group tied to the Saudi terrorist Osama Bin Laden. Bishop Jimenez said he thinks it is more likely Fr Giuseppe was kidnapped by ordinary criminals who want ransom money.
