Comment Email Print
Two priests have been assassinated in Colombia, within hours of each other - the Missionary News Service reported this morning. Fr Gabriel Arias Posada, vicar general of the diocese of Armenia and parish priest of the Holy Spirit Church in central-western Colombia, was killed in the rural area of Anserma, in the Caldas department. Fr Gabriel was reportedly in the area to negotiate the release of the former governor Ancizar López López, held hostage for months by the guerrillas of the FARC (Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia). The authorities suspect it was the guerrillas who opened fire on the priest's vehicle. Fr Gabriel's driver was also shot dead at close range. A few hours earlier, in the Sucre region north-west of the country, unidentified gunmen killed the parish priest of Chalán, Don José Luis Cárdenas, just after he had celebrated Mass. The deaths of these two priests, brings the total number the number of religious killed in Colombia in the last decade to 28. source: MISNA
