¬†In the seventh issue of the human rights magazine, Just Right, Danny Smith tells the dramatic story of the rescue of Asha, a fourteen-year old girl who was about to be sold for £600 into a brothel by her mother's boy-friend. Danny Smith, Jubilee Action's Director writes of the experience of meeting Asha in Bombay's red light district 'Amidst this oppression, desolation and modern-day slavery, Asha seemed to glow like a precious jewel. I knew that if we couldn't provide a home for Asha, the doors of another house would open and would change her forever, condemned to a life of sexual slavery. ' Just Right, published this week, carries an impressive line up including an exclusive interview with environmentalist Zac Goldsmith and articles from the theologians Roger Forster and Michael Novak who give opposing accounts on the question of a just war. Baroness Cox also writes on why she risks her life to help others. David Alton writes a powerful account of hidden genocide in Burma following his recent trip to the area. Finally, the issue carries a poignant article from Germain Ndaruhutse, a survivor of Rwanda's genocide who speaks for the first time of his experience Danny Smith's special feature tells the story of Asha whose mother who was a prostitute who had died of AIDS. The brothel owners, where her mother had worked, threw Asha and her siblings into the streets. Danny, together with Jubilee Action's Partner, Revd Deveraj rescued Asha just as her mother's boyfriend was negotiating Asha's sale to the brothel. Seven years after that story unfolded, Jubilee Action has built two homes, a half-way house and night shelter to provide protection for the daughters of prostitutes. A ray of hope came in June 2002, when Asha married Sanjay (a fellow shelter worker) and Danny had the privilege of giving her away on her wedding day. Just Right is published quarterly by Jubilee Action and aims to inform and inspire action on human rights.
