Comment Email Print
¬†Father Saulo CarreŮo, a Catholic priest serving in the Saravena diocese, and his secretary, Maritza Linares, have been shot dead by two masked killers on bicycles near 'Sarare' hospital on the road to Fortul in the northwestern department of Arauca, the Colombian broadcaster 'Radio Caracol' has said. The victims, who were in their car at the time of the assassination, died on the spot. The departmental police chief Colonel Luis Alcides Morales said he knew of no threats against the priest. The local authorities have offered a reward of 30 million pesos (roughly 10,000 dollars) for anyone with information concerning the identity of the killers. Both FARC (Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia) and ELN (National Liberation Army), as well as the paramilitaries of AUC (Self-Defence Forces of Colombia), are active in the small oil town with 28,000 inhabitants. The department of Arauca has seen an escalation of violence since the start of this year, characterised by bombings, attacks on power stations and selected homicides. Given its strategic importance, roughly 70 US military experts have been in the region since 18 January with the task of training the regular Colombian army stationed in the area in anti-guerrilla techniques.
