Uganda: rebels kill boy, injure missionary

An Italian Comboni missionary was wounded this morning by the rebels of the LRA (lord's Resistance Army) in North Uganda, the Missionary News Service reports. Sixty-six year-old Father Guido Cellana narrowly escaped a rebel ambush, but a 15-year-old boy travelling with him was killed. Fr Guido has an injured hand. The two were travelling to Aliwal where Fr Guido is parish priest. A group of seven rebels opened fire on Fr Guido's car at around 11.30am local time near the village of Okankel (northern district of Lira). The boy died on the spot. Fr Guido was forced from the vehicle and robbed. The LRA rebels set the car on fire. Fr Guido ran and hid in the bush with rebels shooting after him. He was later brought to the hospital of Lira, where he was treated for a bullet hole in his hand. Doctors say he is out of danger, but in a serious state of shock. In the past two weeks the LRA rebels have killed over 200 people in the Lira district, where thousands of displaced have fled the villages from fear of attacks by the rebels that since 1987 have been causing death and destruction throughout North Uganda.
