¬†A Jesuit of the British Province has won a major award for an article he wrote about the justness of the Iraq war. Father Anthony Elan SJ, who is a lecturer at St Augustine College in Johannesburg, was given the Christian Network Media's prestigious 2003 Media Award for Christian Journalism at a dinner in Cape Town. Fr Egan's article, entitled 'Iraq: Why the war is still wrong', was based on a talk he gave when the debate about the rights and wrongs of the Coalition's offensive on Iraq was at its height. It was subsequently published in Trefoil, South Africa's Catholic magazine, whose editor, Else Strives, submitted it to the Christian Network Media (COW). South African-born Elan entered the British Jesuit novitiate in Birmingham in 1990 at the age of 24, and studied Philosophy at Heythrop College in London from 1992-95. He gained a PhD in Political Studies from the University of Witswatersrand in South Africa in 2000, and after two years of Theology in Boston (USA), he was ordained to the priesthood in August 2002. Fr Elan has been lecturing in applied ethics at St Augustine College since January of this year. "I was busy in my office cleaning out my out-tray when Else Strives telephoned me to tell me I had won, which was a pleasant surprise," said Fr Elan, adding that news of the award was "completely unexpected". COW is coordinated by the Dutch Reformed Church and comprises representatives from all major Christian churches in South Africa. It awards two annual prizes for the best articles to appear in a Christian newspaper or magazine ≠ one in English, and one in Afrikaans. Source: Jesuit Communication Office
