Comment Email Print
CAFOD issued a statement today welcoming the release of Mark Henderson and the four Israeli tourists held hostage by Colombia's ELN guerrillas. Paying tribute to the Colombian Church negotiators, Mgr Hector Fabio Henao and Fr Darío Echeverri, whose skill and patience achieved this success, said: " We is proud to support their work." The statement also welcomes the Colombian government's backing this week for another Church initiative to secure the release of 70 Colombians held hostage by the country's largest guerrilla group, the FARC (Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia). Francis McDonagh, CAFOD's Colombian Programme Officer, said: "We hope that the release of these hostages opens the way for broader talks that eventually secure a just peace for the Colombian people, who have been the main victims of this conflict for almost 40 years."
