¬†A Mass for Mgr Michael Courtney, the papal nuncio who was assassinated in Burundi on 29 December will be celebrated by Vatican Secretary of State, Angelo Sodano at St Peter's this Thursday at 5pm. His funeral was celebrated in two parts: first, in Bujumbura, the capital of Burundi, on 31 December and then in his former parish church of St Mary of the Rosary in Nenagh, in the diocese of Killaloe, Ireland, last Saturday. Cardinal Francis Arinze, Prefect of the Congregation for the Divine Cult and Discipline of the Sacraments, presided at the funeral rite, in the company of Archbishop Carlo Maria ViganÚ, apostolic nuncio and papal representative. Monsignor Courtney was ordained bishop by Cardinal Arinze in the same church on 12 November 2000. The cardinal concelebrated with Cardinal Desmond Connell, Archbishop of Dublin, Monsignor Diarmuid Martin, Coadjutor Bishop of Dublin, the Apostolic Nuncio in Ireland, Archbishop Giuseppe Lazzarotto, the President of the Irish Bishops' Conference, Monsignor SeŠn Baptist Brady, and numerous Irish bishops. Three brothers and three sisters of the deceased nuncio attended the service in the packed church. At the end of the liturgy, Monsignor Courtney was buried in nearby Dromineer. Source: MISNA
