Burkina Faso: missionary killed

 Spanish Brother Ignacio García Alonso, the 62-year-old director of the 'Brothers of Christian Schools', has been killed in Tounouma, near Bobo-Dioulasso, in Burkina Faso. The news has just reached the Missionary News Service. The crime took place on February 6. Brother Ignacio Biain, secretary of the Institute said: "He was massacred by one or more people that managed to escape." Brother Ignacio was found in a pool of blood, with signs of machete blows to his head. Local authorities are investigating the crime. Brother Alonso, worked for over 40 years in the missionary apostolate in Morocco, Niger and above all Burkina Faso. He was well known and greatly esteemed in the province of Bobo-Dioulasso and throughout the western region of the nation. Following prayer vigils at the school he directed, he was buried in Toussiana, around 50km from the city, where he directed another school. Brother Ignacio is the second Spanish missionary to be murdered in Burkina Faso. On 13 October 2001 a mentally deranged man assassinated Father Celestino Di Giovambattista, Camillian chaplain of the civil hospital and prisons of the capital, Ouagadougou. Source: MISNA
