Chile: ex-soldier faces trial for 1973 murder of priest
Comment Email Print
The Chilean judiciary has decided to remand a retired army major, Donato López for trial, 31 years after the murder of Spanish Catholic priest Joan Alsina Hurtos. The killing dates back to 11 September 1973, when general Augusto Pinochet Ugarte took power in a coup d'état. On the same day, the Salesian priest was arrested by a military patrol outside the 'San Juan de Dios' hospital in Santiago, where he worked, and taken to a detention centre. A few days later, probably on 19 September, Father Hurtos was shot dead together with other detainees under one of the bridges crossing the Mapocho River, which runs through Santiago. Yesterday, justice Jorge Zepeda pressed charges of homicide against López, who was at the head of the Yungay regiment in San Felipe, the location of the detention centre in question, at the time of the shooting.
