Rwanda: court approves transfer of Fr Theunis to Belgium
Comment Email Print
¬†Rwanda's High Court has ruled in favour of the transfer of the detained Belgian priest Father Guy Theunis to his native country to stand trial on genocide charges. Fr Theunis was arrested in September by Rwandan authorities in Kigali on charges of incitement of genocide in 1994. It is now up to the Kigali Cabinet to give the definitive 'go ahead' that, according to the Rwandan press, could arrive already in the next days. "We are relieved by this news and hope that the procedure ends well", Fr RaphaŽl Deillon, assistant of the general council of the Missionaries of Africa (White Fathers), said. "We hope that our confrere can return to Belgium, as we have been told for weeks now, and that in his country it will be easier to organise his defence", added Fr Deillon. On September 26 Belgian Foreign Minister Karel de Guth formalised the request to his Rwandan counterpart for the transferral of the trial against Fr Theunis to a Belgian court. There has however been no response to the request for the provisional release of the missionary filed in mid September. Source: MISNA
