Pope Francis to Catechists: Resurrection is the centre of all you teach

Pope Francis has urged catechists to focus first and foremost on the Resurrection.

Speaking at the Jubilee of Catechists this Sunday (25 September 2016) the Holy Father said Christ's victory over death was "the centre" of the Good News, and "the beating heart" around which all else revolves.

He described Christ rising from the dead as "the key message of the faith", which catechists needed to keep right at the centre of their apostolate.

Pope Francis said: "the Lord Jesus loves you, and he has given his life for you. He is close to you and waits for you every day. We must never forget this." Nothing was "more important; more relevant than this," he added.

Then, referring to the Gospel today, the 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time, the Pope described the parable of Lazarus and the wealthy man as a lesson in how the Lord cares - through us - for all those neglected and discarded by the world.

The catechists' "mission and duty" is to bring the Good News to those most in need, he said.

Concluding, the Pope prayed that the Lord would bless all catechists with the grace of being renewed daily by "the joy" of Jesus death and resurrection for each one of us.

"May he give us the strength to live and proclaim the commandment of love, overcoming blindness of appearances, and worldly sadness," he said.

The Pope's last prayer was for the Lord to render catechists "sensitive to the poor", who are not an afterthought in the Gospel "but central to its message".
