Durham: Postgraduate Scholarships & Bursaries in Catholic Theology & Catholic Studies


The Centre for Catholic Studies (CCS) at Durham University invites applications from full-time and part-time candidates (both existing students and new candidates) for fixed-term Postgraduate Scholarships (full fees) and fixed-term Postgraduate Bursaries (partial help towards fees) in Catholic Theology / Catholic Studies as listed below. Please note, candidates who reside at distance from Durham (beyond the limits of a realistic daily commute, when required) are not eligible to apply on the grounds that they are not able to commit to regular participation in the academic life and programme of the CCS.

An application form for the awards may be obtained from the Postgraduate Admissions & Scholarships Secretary within the Department of Theology and Religion and must be returned to Postgraduate Admissions & Scholarships Secretary not later than Friday 30th May, 2016. In addition, new candidates for a postgraduate degree within the Department of Theology and Religion must have submitted a completed on-line application, including all supporting documents no later than Friday 13th May, 2016 (for details see www.dur.ac.uk/theology.religion/postgrad/apply/ ). All intending applicants for the awards are advised to read carefully the notes below concerning eligibility before making an application.

CATHERINE MCAULEY POSTGRADUATE BURSARY FUND

In association with the Institute of Our Lady of Mercy: donated funds up to a total of £15,000 may be awarded on a competitive basis to full-time or part-time postgraduate candidates (both existing students and new candidates) in Catholic Theology / Catholic Studies within the Department of Theology and Religion and who reside within a realistic daily commute of Durham when required. These funds may be awarded as a combination of one or more fixed-term Postgraduate Scholarships (full fees) and/or one or more fixed-term Postgraduate Bursaries (partial help towards fees). The total amount of £15,000 need not be awarded in a given year and may be split between candidates. Alongside academic excellence and potential, consideration will also be given to personal financial circumstances.

CST-focused Catherine McAuley PhD Scholarship (f/t or p/t, capped at UK/EC fees-only)

The Catherine McAuley Bursary Fund is to establish a second fees-only PhD Scholarship (either full-time or part-time but either way capped at the DU fees-rate for UK/EC PhD students), also focused in the area of Catholic social thought and practice and specifically exploring theoretical and practical questions concerning Catholic identity in faith-based organisations. The precise scope and focus of this second project will be agreed with the CCS through the application process. Candidates with creative ideas for a PhD in this area and a proven knowledge of CST are encouraged to apply. Potential applicants wishing to talk through any such substantive matters are encouraged to contact Dr Anna Rowlands by email: anna.rowlands@durham.ac.uk Candidates will need to be able to reside within realistic daily commute of Durham when required. The successful candidate will have access to Durham University's library and on-line resources; be supervised by a team composed of Dr Anna Rowlands and one other member of staff from within the Department of Theology and Religion; and will also receive support from the CSAN network.

Applicants for this scholarship will not yet have completed a standard DU application for postgraduate admission which, in addition to the Bursary application, will need completing and submitting on-line (citing 'CST McAuley Project' in the Field of Study area and in the Finance/funding section) by Friday 13th May, 2016: see: www.dur.ac.uk/theology.religion/postgrad/apply/

MARY WARD POSTGRADUATE BURSARY FUND

In association with the Congregation of Jesus: donated funds up to a total of £15,000 may be awarded on a competitive basis to full-time or part-time postgraduate candidates (both existing students and new candidates in receipt of formal offers) in Catholic Theology / Catholic Studies within the Department of Theology and Religion and who are able to reside within realistic daily commute of Durham. These funds may be awarded as a combination of one or more fixed-term Postgraduate Scholarships (full fees) and/or one or more fixed-term Postgraduate Bursaries (partial help towards fees). The total amount of £15,000 need not be awarded in a given year and may be split between candidates. Alongside academic excellence and potential, consideration will also be given to personal financial circumstances.

THE ST JUDE POSTGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP FUND

In association with an individual benefactor who has received many graces and favours through the intercession of St Jude: donated funds up to a total of £8,000 may be awarded on a competitive basis to full-time or part-time postgraduate candidates in Catholic Theology / Catholic Studies within the Department of Theology and Religion (both existing students and new candidates in receipt of formal offers) and who are able to reside within realistic daily commute of Durham. These funds may be awarded as a combination of one or more fixed-term Postgraduate Scholarships (full fees) and/or one or more fixed-term Postgraduate Bursaries (partial help towards fees). The total amount of £8,000 need not be awarded in a given year and may be split between candidates. Alongside academic excellence and potential, consideration will also be given to personal financial circumstances.

NEWMAN ASSOCIATION BURSARY

Donated funds from the Newman Association, up to a total of £1,000, may be awarded on a competitive basis to full-time or part-time postgraduate candidates (both existing students and new candidates in receipt of formal offers) in Catholic Theology / Catholic Studies within the Department of Theology and Religion and who are able to reside within realistic daily commute of Durham. The total amount of £1,000 need not be awarded in a given year and may be split between candidates. Priority will be given to candidates with a shortfall in fees funding and on the basis of personal financial need.

More than one award may be made from each of the above funds in a given year. In all cases, applicants will be required to state their financial position and to update the relevant bodies (through the Postgraduate Admissions & Scholarships Secretary for the Department of Theology and Religion) of any changes to this during the course of the academic year to which any relevant award applies. Recommendations for awards will be submitted to the Scholarships Committee of the Department of Theology and Religion, who will make the final decision.
