Catholic peacemakers: Bombing Syria is not Just War

Bruce Kent, Vice President, CND:

"Last night's vote offers no solution whatever - in fact it makes the present crisis worse. To isolate ISIS we need to cut off their sources of supply not to give them more recruits which is all bombing will achieve - apart of course from killing yet more innocent people. We have already killed, or helped to kill, thousands of those already in Iraq.

Who advises our Bishops? That is really a question that needs answering.

The Government will be delighted to have what will be seen as their support. The Just War doctrine suggests that war is a last resort only, is directed at enemy forces not innocent civilians and has serious prospects of success

Why don't such criteria get applied by our Bishops?.

Pat Gaffney, General Secretary, Pax Christi:

Pax Christi is very distressed at the decision to expand airstrikes in Syria. Many of our members lobbied their Members of Parliament right up to the last moment, urging them not to vote in support of airstrikes. We stand by the statement made by Pax Christi International:

...it is so easy to use armed violence in revenge, to justify it as the best way to solve ongoing bloody conflicts, and to offer it to citizens as the only source of security; however, military operations distract us from core components of this terror. ...

We will be monitoring the impact of the air strikes and will continue to work with our sister peace organisations to challenge the causes of war
