Novena to St Francis

This Novena to St Francis is for the love of creation and those who live in poverty, asking St Francis to intercede for us as we ask God to guide world leaders in the run up to the UN Sustainable Development Summit. The summit starts with a speech from Pope Francis in New York on 25 September, as world leaders gather to agree the 17 new Sustainable Development Goals that aim to eradicate poverty by 2030.

CAFOD supporters say: "Please join with us in praying this novena for nine days leading up to the summit, starting on Wednesday 17 September".

Day 1 - For the love of the sun

Most High, all-powerful, all-good Lord, all praise is yours, all glory, honour and blessings. To you alone, Most High, do they belong;no mortal lips are worthy to pronounce your name.
We praise you, Lord, for all your creatures, especially for Brother Sun,who is the day through whom you give us light. And he is beautiful and radiant with great splendour,of you Most High, he bears your likeness.
(Extract from Canticle of the Sun, St Francis of Assisi)

Creator God, we give you thanks for our brother sun, who gives us light, warmth and energy. We remember those in remote locations whose lives have been transformed by the power of the sun.

Forgive us for the times we have taken the gifts of your creation for granted, taken more than our fair share, or used them for our own ends without considering the consequences.

Guide world leaders to put those who live in poverty and the good of creation at the heart of their decisions.
Inspire us to come together and reach out in solidarity with our sisters and brothers throughout the world. And lead us all to play our part by making changes to better love our neighbours and care for your creation.
We ask this through Christ our Lord, Amen.
