London: Flower Power at St Joseph's
Adults with learning disabilities were delighted to be invited to participate in their own Flower Festival recently. They created a beautiful display to adorn the statue of St Joseph at St Edmund the Confessor Roman Catholic Church in Golders Green - which is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year.
The Floral Enterprise Scheme operates on a Thursday afternoon at Caritas St Joseph's Activities Centre, in Hendon north London. Participants create flower arrangements and other displays, with Linda Martin, a florist from Hertfordshire.
"It is a wonderful opportunity for people with intellectual disabilities to work in a group, have fun, work hard and produce items for sale to raise funds to further the work of our charity," Auriel Bell said.
The organisation based in Hendon has two main areas of work. The Activities Centre provides learning opportunities to develop life skills and vocational or leisure courses to, largely, adults with Learning Disabilities; and an Outreach service which supports families in the parishes in their spiritual and social life.
