Cuban church leaders have welcomed the news that Pope Francis plans to visit the island later this year.

The Assistant Secretary of the Bishops Conference of Cuba, Mgr José Félix García told a press conference in Havana: "The Catholic Church in Cuba has received the news of the Pope's visit in September with great joy, in the new era of rapprochement with the United States, a process in which the Vatican acted as mediator."

The spokesman of the Archdiocese of Havana, Orlando Marquez, said that "the Pope's visit will support the Cuban Church in its traditional attention to the cause of peace and the common good." Marquez highlighted the "privilege" of Cuba, of welcoming three Popes: John Paul II in 1998, Benedict XVI in 2012 and now Pope Francis.

Pope Francis will be in Cuba in September, on dates to be determined, before his visit to the United States.
