CAFOD World Gifts

CAFOD is celebrating the tenth year of its hugely successful World Gifts scheme this year by unveiling a new range for Christmas 2014, featuring over 40 inspiring and unique gifts that will make a lasting difference to people living in poverty overseas.

Over the past ten years, the Catholic community across England and Wales have given generously, raising a staggering £12 million through World Gifts. A whole host of presents have been bought by the charity’s supporters including 103,000 school starter kits, 46,000 goats, 38,000 chickens and 3,000 queen bees.

From providing drought-resistant crops to teaching someone to read, there are many brilliant ways to celebrate the true spirit of Christmas giving through World Gifts. This year, regular bestsellers such as cows, health clinics and vegetable gardens are joined by fantastic new gift ideas including the ‘Camel that Carries’ – a working animal which gives families in desert climates a way to transport goods to market.

Parishes and Catholic schools and youth groups can also pitch together this Christmas to buy gifts such as a medical outreach team – a life-saving gift which funds medical professionals who bring essential healthcare services to remote communities. The range also features gifts that offer life-long skills, such as starting up a business or even training as a village vet.

Since its introduction in 2004, the World Gifts collection has become a festive favourite with many of the charity’s supporters, including Coronation Street Actor and CAFOD ambassador Ben Price.

Ben Price said: “Earlier this year, I visited rural Uganda where I met families who were benefitting from CAFOD-funded beekeeping starter kits. The villagers were pastoralists and agriculturalists but could no longer farm or keep cattle because of an extended drought. Through beekeeping, however, they now have an alternative livelihood.

“The honey they harvest is a brilliant source of nutritious food and can be sold at the local market providing a sustainable income. World Gifts really are a game-changer for many communities living in extreme poverty, they’re gifts which you can be sure won’t be forgotten by New Year.”

The range starts from as little as £4 and also includes a “finishing touches” line, small additional World Gifts such as individual meals and life-saving vaccines, which make perfect stocking fillers or Secret Santa presents. With E-gift certificates available to download right up to Christmas, World Gifts are a last minute shopper’s dream. Orders over £50 will receive a free World Gifts tote bag.
