Missio director expresses sorrow at death of Nelson Mandela
Mgr Canon James Cronin, National Director of Missio in England and Wales spoke on behalf of Catholics throughout the two countries as he expressed his sorrow on hearing the news of the death of Nelson Mandela. "As Catholics we believe that death is not the end of life: it is a transition into the fullness of life with God and the end to which we all aspire. Life is the real 'long walk to freedom'. Our hearts have all been touched and enriched by the magnificent example of such a great man."
"In many ways, as a result of our mutual concern for the freedom and dignity of the poor and marginalised people of South Africa, Mandela and Missio have worked in parallel. The difference is that Mandela's path led through politics whereas Missio's support has been through the local Church as it stood up against injustice and modelled reconciliation and forgiveness.
Mandela needed the courageous help of ordinary men and women in bringing to birth the 'rainbow nation' of South Africa and many Missio-funded Church leaders like Bishop Kevin Dowling and Archbishop Denis Hurley were at the forefront of this struggle. Red Box holders in England and Wales should be proud to know that their donations went to supporting the Church in South Africa and making this dream of equality for all a reality."
