Christian Aid fast for action on climate change
The United Nations is meeting in Poland this week to discuss climate change (COP 19). The head of the Philippines delegation, Yeb Sano, is fasting during each day until political leaders take meaningful action. "What my country is going through as a result of this extreme climate event is madness," he said. "In solidarity with my countrymen who are struggling to find food, I will voluntarily refrain from eating until a meaningful outcome is in sight."
Christian Aid called for a fast on Wednesday, in solidarity with the people of the Philippines, and to call for serious action on climate change by the UN conference. Christian Aid said in a statement: "Typhoon Haiyan has killed thousands and left more than 900,000 people homeless. We are the stewards of God’s Earth and we need to stand by our sisters and brothers who are hardest hit by climate change, who have no option but to live in areas at risk. It is clear that climate change makes extreme events like Typhoon Haiyan more likely and more devastating."
Ed Davey MP, Secretary of State for Energy & Climate Change, is attending the UN meeting in Warsaw on behalf of the UK Government.
Christian Aid has set up a petition calling for Mr Davey to urge the conference to take action on climate action.
