St Mary-le-Bow

St Mary-le-Bow

The JustShare City Talk series at St Mary-le-Bow Church, on faith and politics starts this Wednesday with: 'What has the Bible ever done for us? Nick Spencer, Research Director at Theos, will discuss his latest book, Freedom and Order: History, Politics and the English Bible, in which he argues that it is impossible to understand British politics without reference to the influence of the Bible in shaping the values (equality, tolerance, government for the common good, popular selection of leaders) from which our political system emerged.

Later lectures in the series will be:

Wednesday 21st September at 6.05pm
'Libya, elusive revolutions and the empire of oil' - Dr Wilf Wilde, a member of JustShare, offers a critique of what he calls the Empire of Global Capital, drawing together his experiences as a political economist, City analyst for an oil company, Ofgem director and Christian. Tracing the geo-politics and history of the Middle East and North Africa from the 19th century to today, he will argue that the ‘crude motive’ for the US and UK’s interventions in Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya is, and always has been, oil.

Tuesday 27th September at 12.30pm

Do they believe the economic crisis was also a moral crisis? How do the Roman Catholic and Anglican traditions on economic thought differ and in what ways are they similar? Could the crisis have been avoided had the Pope and Archbishop been on the boards of some of our banks?! What is the role of Christian teaching in the City marketplace?

Tuesday 18th October at 1.05pm
JustShare Talk for National Ethical Investment Week ‘The Ethics of Investment Banking’ John Reynolds will discuss his new book of the same title, co-written with Canon Ed Newell and due to be launched in early October. John studied Theology at Cambridge before embarking upon a 20-year career in banking, spanning equity research, mergers and acquisitions, financial restructuring and principal investment. He has been described in the media as ‘a world class investment banker’ and ‘exceptionally bright but abrasive.’ Having also chaired the Church of England Ethical Investment Advisory Group since 2006, he is well-placed to explore what ethics might mean in the context of investment banking.

Wednesday 26th October at 6.05pm
