New library for north London school
The Newman Room - a state-of-the art library and music room was opened by Bishop John Arnold, at St Patrick's Primary School in Kentish Town, north London on Wednesday.
The day began with a lively concert of music, poetry and drama in the hall, by each of the school year groups. Bishop John praised the children for their energy and confidence and told them they were all 'ambassadors for Christ'. Prizes were then given for 'excellent attainment', 'excellent progress' and 'contribution to our community'.
The opening ceremony of the Newman Room then took place with a short play and song from the children lead by music teacher Ros Savournin. The Chair of Governors Margaret Harvey released a white dove, Bishop John gave a blessing and cut the ribbon.
Looking out onto the school's Quiet Garden this beautiful building has many innovative features - including acoustic attenuators and natural ventilation - and already won a Royal Institute of British Architects award.
Designed by Coffey Architects and constructed by Bolt and Heeks, the Newman Room will be stocked with books provided by the Camden Library Service or purchased by the school and partly chosen by the pupils.
The library will double as a music room on one or two days a week for lessons on the recorder, guitar, piano, trumpet and trombone.
Headteacher Sean Cranitch said: “Our children deserve the best. Growing up in central London has its advantages. It is a wonderful place in many ways. But sometimes the children need a quiet space in which to grow in their learning. We aim to provide that here through facilities like the new library.”
