Kairos Palestine thanks Westminster J&P for their support

Kairos Palestine has written to the Westminster Justice and Peace Commission,  to thank them for their recent statement. (See: ICN 17 January 2011 - J&P urges churches to endorse Kairos Palestine document  www.indcatholicnews.com/news.php?viewStory=17679)

The letter follows:

Dear Diocese of Westminster Justice and Peace Commission,

Kairos Palestine is thrilled with your choice of this most opportune moment to express your support of our document. You have astutely remarked that with the world focus on the overwhelming uproar in the Arab World, injustice goes on in Palestine and unfortunately the American veto against the condemnation of settlements at the security council to-day does not herald peaceful signs.

Thank you for choosing the "Kairos" to draw the attention of the churches in the UK  that the Westminster Justice and Peace Commission has decided to ‘redress a regrettable silence in endorsing a poignant Christian statement that to date has received very little attention from any of the Christian Churches in this country'. Your courageous stand will not go unheeded ad we sincerely hope that many other churches will follow suit by accepting your invitation to add their support. In fact we do wonder about the reticence of the Church to dare and speak out as you did. By what right can anybody distort the image of God in the human being and deprive others of their human rights?

We congratulate you and ask God's blessings upon you, true peacemakers, you who have listened to our call and responded to our appeal “Are you able to help us get our freedom back? for this is the only way you can help the two peoples attain justice, peace security and love." Even when you chose your non-violent resistance tools to end the occupation, you did not totally discard boycott and divestment that according to you are not “the only, or most accessible “tools., and you do invite the churches to honestly investigate and examine which and if any of their organisations "in fact profit from the Israeli Occupation?"

We appreciate all that you do in prayers, twinning with Palestinian parishes, promoting and selling our products and nudging your MPs to bring about a change in their policies. Help us love and live together in the land that can be a model of true human values .

Sincerely,

Rifat Odeh Kassis
