The Most Reverend Patrick Kelly, Archbishop of Liverpool, is to celebrate a Mass of Thanksgiving following the visit of Pope Benedict XVI which took place from 16-19 September. The celebration will take place in the Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King, Liverpool, at 7.30 pm this Thursday 30 September. The Mass is open to all and will be an opportunity for those who attended events to relive precious moments and for those who followed events in their home or parish to give thanks for the blessings of the visit.

At his weekly General Audience in Rome on Wednesday last, 22 September, Pope Benedict said of his visit: "And in the four intense and very beautiful days spent in that noble land, I had the great joy of speaking to the heart of the inhabitants of the United Kingdom, and they spoke to mine, especially with their presence and the testimony of their faith".

Liverpool writer Frank Cottrell Boyce, who compered the gathering of 85,000 people for the Vigil in Hyde Park on Saturday 18 September, will read at the Mass.

One of the highlights of the visit was the beatification of Cardinal John Henry Newman at Cofton Park, Birmingham on Sunday 19 September. During the Mass Newman's great hymns 'Praise to the Holiest in the Height' and 'Lead Kindly Light' will be sung. Archbishop Patrick Kelly said: "The Holy Father at his General Audience in Rome on Wednesday 22 September said: "the culmination of my visit to the United Kingdom was the beatification of Cardinal John Henry Newman, illustrious son of England". It seems to me one phrase from Blessed John Henry Newman's great hymn "Praise to the holiest in the height" captures the spirit of those four blessed days: "O loving wisdom of our God". We saw among us a man of wisdom that is loving and love that is wise, but seeking only one thing: to open every heart and mind to the loving wisdom of our God. On Thursday evening when we sing those words it is absolutely certain that they will well up from hearts in which the Holy Spirit has made his dwelling."

The Mass of Thanksgiving for the visit of Pope Benedict XVI will begin at 7.30 pm in the Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King, Liverpool. All are welcome to attend.
