On his first day in office, Archbishop Bernard Longley met the Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Councillor Michael Wilkes, and the Anglican Bishop of Birmingham, Bishop David Urquhart, in the Lord Mayor's Parlour, before the City of Birmingham Christmas Carol Service held in Birmingham Anglican Cathedral. Archbishop Bernard and Bishop David gave a joint blessing at the end of the service.

Later in the day, the Archbishop attended the Maryvale Institute Degree Ceremony, in St Chad's Cathedral. Cardinal Stafford, Head of the Apostolic Penitentiary, 2003-2009, presented the Higher Education Awards 2009.
