¬†Small fundraising projects in parish and community groups around the UK have collected more than £3,015,755 for the CAFOD Challenge 2001 scheme since it was launched in 1998. Director Julian Filochowski said: "It's a great credit to CAFOD's regular supporters that Challenge 2000 has been such a success. It's marvelous that so many people have given their time and effort - and of course their money - to this scheme. It's a fantastic commitment to making the new millennium a time of real change for the poorest people in the world." Each year the Challenge 2000 and 2001 scheme has had a different focus. In 1998 the scheme raised £780,263 for healthcare projects. In 1999, £929,739 for education, and £964,374 in 2000, when the focus was food projects. The 2001 focus is 'livelihood' and supporters have raised £341,379 so far. The final total for 2001 will not be known until some time next year. Julian Filochowski is delighted by the support Challenge 2000 and 2001 have given to CAFOD's long-term work. He said: "Disasters like the earthquakes in El Salvador, India and Peru tend to get all the headlines, but people haven't forgotten that there are ordinary projects in the developing world that need support all the time. It would be a great achievement if we could mark this final year of the project by raising more than £1 million for livelihood projects." 2001 will be the last year of the current scheme. A new fundraising programme - Today, Tomorrow, Together - will be unveiled in January 2002. It will continue to give participants the opportunity to celebrate their faith through active partnership with communities overseas.
