Archbishop of Birmingham pays tribute to murdered missionary

The Most Reverend Vincent Nichols, Archbishop of Birmingham said: "I am deeply saddened to learn of the death of Fr Rufus Halley in the Philippines at the hands of gunmen. "His work to bring about better understanding and relationships between Christians and Muslims finds a strong echo here in Birmingham. "I pray that his sacrifice will serve as a powerful witness to the importance of faithfulness and generosity of spirit in life today. These are the qualities with which Fr Rufus dedicated his life to Christ. May he rest in peace." A diocesan spokesmann said: "During a study break in the early 1990's Fr Rufus Halley assisted the parish priest of St Jude's, Maypole, in Birmingham. He was held in very high regard by the parishioners, many of whom he kept in touch with over the years." A Memorial Mass for Fr Rufus will be held at St Jude's parish church in Birmingham at 10am on Friday 14 September. see also: ICN Bandits kill Irish missionary 30 August 2001
