Will reveals Cardinal Winning's modest lifestyle
Comment Email Print
¬†Cardinal Thomas Winning, died leaving almost no possessions or money, the Scotsman reported yesterday. A church spokesman said the cardinal never took his £4,000 a year stipend from the diocese, preferring to live on cash gifts and his old age pension of £72.50 a week. He said: "In keeping with the cardinal's wishes, the exact and formal details of his will, are not going to be made public. However, suffice to say that his lifestyle was very modest and he left very modest amounts to family members." The cardinal's books are being donated to a local seminary and his clothes will be given to the poor. Cardinal Winning, who died in June after two heart attacks, lived in a large villa on the south side of Glasgow, but his home and his car belonged to the Church.
