Catholic agency publishes facts about asylum seekers

¬†There are a number of myths about asylum seekers in the UK, the National Catholic Refugee Forum, said this week. In a new leaflet, the organisation, which works with other Christians, faith groups and agencies supporting the rights of refugees, say: * Far from being flooded with asylum seekers, applications are dropping. In 2001, there were 11% fewer than in 2000. * Far from being the top destination for asylum seekers, the UK ranks 12th in in terms of applications in relation to overall population in the EU. The vast majority of refugees flee to countries bordering their own country, never coming to Europe. * Far from being a burden on the tax payer, migrants, including asylum seekers, made a net fiscal contribution of approximately £2.5 billion - worth 1p on income tax, in 1999-2000. * Far from being attracted by our 'generous benefits system', asylum seekers find themselves having to survive on 30% below income support - just £37.77 for a single adult per week.
