Lancashire paper resurrects window in time for Easter

¬†A campaign run by a local paper in Lancashire restored a vandalised church window in time for Easter. Thanks to an article in the Gazette during Lent, generous anonymous donors provided the full cost to repair a stained glass memorial window in the Sacred Heart church in Blackpool, that had been smashed by a vandal. Or, as the local paper put it: "Jesus is to be resurrected at a Blackpool church ≠ thanks to the Gazette." After reading the story in the local Fylde evening paper, various anonymous donors came forward, shocked at what had happened, and wanting to restore the window to its former glory. By Good Friday, ten days after the original article appeared, Fr Denis Blackledge, Parish Priest at Sacred Heart, had been given £470 towards cost of renewal. Someone gave £250, gift-aided, which meant £320. Another person came with an envelope containing five £20 notes. Others gave £10. Then, to cap it all, on Holy Saturday afternoon at about 4.30pm, someone phoned on behalf of someone else ≠ again wishing to be anonymous! ≠ and offering to pay the whole amount. And when Fr Denis told the middle-person that £470 had already been donated, the anonymous benefactor said they would give whatever the rest of the cost of repair bill came to. True to their word, a plain brown envelope arrived on Monday 28th April, from the said anonymous donor, containing £500 in £20 notes! A stunned Fr Denis said: "It's absolutely fantastic. I'm thrilled to bits at the amazing generosity of people. Holy Week has turned into Resurrection! It just goes to show the power of the local press. Now I can get hold of a craftsman to get the repairs done. And I can keep the insurance people at bay too!" Source: Lancaster Diocese
