Bristol: Canon William O'Callaghan dies


Canon William O'Callaghan, a Priest of the Diocese of Clifton, died on Saturday, 7 June 2003. His Requiem Mass will be celebrated by Rt Rev Declan Lang, Bishop of Clifton, at St Joseph's, Stonehouse, Gloucestershire on Friday, 13 June at 11.30 am. After the Mass his body will be taken to Ireland for burial, details of which have yet to be confirmed. Bishop Declan Lang paid tribute to Canon O'Callaghan saying: "Canon O'Callaghan served the people of the Diocese well. He was very much loved and respected as he cared for people in his gentle way. Many parishioners and friends will be sad at the news of his death and I sure will have him in their prayers. He was someone who was always a pleasure to meet". Canon O'Callaghan was born on the 21st of May 1925 in Mallow, County Cork, Ireland. He studied for the Priesthood at St John's Seminary, Waterford, Ireland and was Ordained Priest in Waterford Cathedral on the 6th of June 1948. He took up his first appointment in the Diocese of Clifton as Curate at the Pro Cathedral, Clifton in July 1950. In August 1952 Fr O'Callaghan moved across the city to St Nicholas of Tolentino, Lawford's Gate again as Curate. His next appointment took him in 1954 to St Ambrose, the Bishop's House, as Private Secretary to Bishop Joseph Rudderham a position he held for ten years. In October of 1964, having been instrumental in the building of the new parish he become the first Parish Priest of Our Lady of Lourdes, Milton, Weston-super-Mare. After three years in Weston Fr O'Callaghan was appointed to the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Stroud. He served as Parish Priest until October 1978 and would return to nearby Stonehouse to spend his retirement in an area of which he was so fond. From Stroud he returned to Bristol as Parish Priest at St Antony's, Henbury until 1985 when he moved to his final Parish of St Joseph, Portishead. Fr O'Callaghan was appointed to the Cathedral Chapter in July 1989 and retired to become an Honorary Canon in November 2001 at the same time he retired as Parish Priest and moved to Stonehouse to enjoy his retirement.
